Durban’s Hidden Art Scene: A Night at The Inbetween Exhibition

by Silo Dimba

Discovering Durban’s Art Scene

On the evening of 21 February 2025, I visited the KZN Art Gallery in Glenwood for the opening of The Inbetween exhibition. I’m usually busy with film and television work, so I don’t often explore other creative spaces. Maybe I’ll catch a music festival or a play once a year. But this event grabbed my attention, especially because Deeply Rooted was there to record it.

A Burst of Local Talent

The project by Rachel Baasch, put the exhibition together. The gallery buzzed with a special energy that night. Durban’s art community showed up in full force. For me, it was a wake-up call about the talent we have right here at home. Honestly, it’s easy to overlook our local art scene when you’re focused elsewhere. That night, though, changed my view.
The exhibition featured a mix of KZN artists and German art students. You’d see names like Abdulghaffar Tammaa, Jess Bothma, John Sempe, Kenneth Shandu, and Lusanda Ndita alongside Camila Mejía, Gabriela Valdespino, Ilona Karácsony, and Tabea Erhart. Their works blended different styles and materials. Each piece told its own story. Yet, together, they highlighted the rich creativity in our community.

A Sense of Togetherness

What stood out most was the connection between everyone there. People chatted, shared ideas, and celebrated the art. Suddenly, it clicked: Durban has plenty of talent. What we need is more exposure and support to help our artists shine.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

Stepping out of my usual routine was so rewarding. Events like The Inbetween widen your perspective. Plus, they’re a lifeline for artists who pour their hearts into their creations. When we show up, engage with their work, and support these moments, we build something bigger for Durban’s culture.
Your Invitation to Join In.
The exhibition runs until 16 March 2025, and I reckon it’s a must-see. Go check it out, enjoy the talent, and back our local creatives. It’s not just about adding value to your own life. It’s also about growing a lively art community here in Durban. So, let’s make a plan to attend more events like this. We can keep our city’s creative spark alive. Who’s with me?
